Garden Space PDX

A Prayer Room and Urban Abbey for the city

At the Garden Space PDX, we envision a vibrant urban sanctuary where individuals and communities come together in prayer & worship, engage in creative expression, and foster connections within the city, thus planting seeds of revitalization, hope, and renewal.

The Story

The Garden Space is located in the heart of Old Town, an area full of both brokenness and beauty and the historic center of our city.

Downtown Portland has a rich tapestry of history, marked by significant narratives and cultural diversity. From the Native Legend of the 3 mountains, to the enduring stories of Chinese immigration and the hardships faced during Japanese internment camps, our city holds both points of pain and profound cultural representation. The struggle against laws targeting black people and the pivotal moments in the Labor Movement echo through time, intertwining with the untamed wilderness of our past, now deeply rooted within our city.

Today, we face pressing issues that shape our current reality. The complexities of the sex industry, the plight of houselessness, the scourge of addiction, the impact of fatherlessness, and the harsh reality of poverty form the backdrop against which our community strives for transformation. Old Town is a final frontier within our city, and it is clear that beautiful buildings exist where the most broken within our city call home. Such a stark contrast to the harsh realities of what our eyes take in as we look into the eyes of the downtrodden on the sidewalks and streets. This area is rich with resources, yet shelters are full, and treatment facilities are at capacity.

Yet, amidst these challenges, we envision a future of vibrant growth and renewal. We dream of a community in full bloom – where all individuals flourish and experience Shalom, a deep sense of peace and well-being. Unity among believers fosters strength, while care for the poor and marginalized creates thriving communities. Healing and freedom abound, nurturing a landscape adorned with color, flowers, and the fruits of shared life- a city where everyone has enough; a healed city that walks as a reconciled people.

Three years ago, PrayerPDX and 24-7 Prayer joined together with over 30 churches to begin interceding in this specific neighborhood for the city of Portland through various seasons and rhythms of prayer. The Garden Church graciously shared their space to make way for united prayer and worship. Now, after City Team Ministry has acquired the same building, their generosity is allowing for a permanent Prayer Room and Urban Abbey to be launched.

We believe prayer will release justice, the creation of beauty will release healing, and our city will be transformed as the people of God gather together to seek Him for the flourishing of all.

We hope you will join us.
